To Walletwatch - Are you trying to suggest that i made up the fact i wasn't given my £70 cash? Clearly there is something not right somewhere, either with Abbey or Capital One. But i know for a fact I didn't receive that money.

No, I am not. But if it is your word against that of the officers of the Bank that do the ATM recon, I don't see the Bank taking your word to be honest. As you say, something has gone wrong somewhere - let us see what the possibilities are:

    1. The Bank officials doing the recon are mistaken / dishonest and have pocketed the money.
    2. You are mistaken (just to cover all possible scenarios) and the cash has been paid out.
    3. There have been compensating errors, wherein you've not been dispensed £70, and somebody else has been dispensed exactly the same amount extra.

If 2 is not true (and I have never said it is), then in scenario 1, I don't see the bank guys owning up, and in scenario 3, I don't see the other guy who's been dispensed the extra amount coming and surrendering the amount either.

Let me give you an idea of what happens when you use an ATM for cash withdrawal. A copy of the receipt that you ask for gets printed within the ATM and this roll is reconciled against the amount left in the cash box, and inconsistencies trapped. (the cash box contents are counted by authorised officers within the bank) If these match, there is no way the Bank is going to accept that some cash has not been dispensed.

Did you do the withdrawal at a branch by the way? In which case, did they have a video camera trained on the ATM? Now that might help !!!

I believe you are telling the truth, but you have as much chance of getting money back from Abbey or Capital One as hell freezing over. Cap one should wear a mask before they issue those cards at 31% interest for cash advances +£2.

Another possibility is the cash could have come out after you left the ATM, some fault in the ATM could have caused a delay.

I was walking past a Natwest ATM a couple of years back and there was £160 in the dispenser.

Soon after ATMs first appeared banks took the view that they never made mistakes. Eventually they were forced to concede they occasionally do, although you will still find the burden of proof is on you.

I had 2 incidents of errors. On the first I ordered £15 and the £5 appeared but the £10 did not (it was separate slots in those days). As the bank was open I complained immediately. They counted the cash and it balanced so they said it must have eventually issued and somebody else took it. To my surprise they gave me the money as I came across as believable. As said before unfortunately (although I believe it) your story sounds dodgy.

The second time was the old Lloyds ATMs which had a lifting flap. As a laugh I held the flap down when it tried to pay cash out to a friend. The money tried to pay out, did a 180 degree turn and disppeared back inside the machine! I was not popular and my friend spent 10 minutes with a bit of wire trying to prise it back out!

I think I lost my point somewhere back there, but that's what happens when I post after drinking. I think it was that your case looks weak but to give it a go anyway. The banks might expect people to try it on sometimes but only those who are genuine will persist.
  • Is there a possibility - however remote - that the machine had been tampered with and someone came along later & collected your cash?

Or maybe your cash got stuck and the next person got it?

All sorts of possibilities, I think ???
