To explain, the subscriber involved was my late mother from whom I inherited my home over 20 years ago. I was content to leave the account in her name as that gave me ex-directory status of a kind. While I've faithfully paid the bills all this time, this situation has come back to haunt me lately. When opening bank accounts, I've had more trouble over ID requirements than I would expect for someone with my very stable lifestyle. I suspect that's down to my given phone number not being listed in my name.
Are you on the electoral role? Do you have a credit card? If you are not or have not, then you can have problems. If you are only guessing, can I suggest taking your problem to the Debt free wannabe's, who know an awful lot of useful stuff and I am sure would help you even though you are not naturally part of their constituency.

i wanted to do this with BT ages ago, but as has been mentioned, they need to close one account down, and create a new one (I wanted to take over the BT Phone line from my parents as I bought there house after having moved back in there a few months earlier) I was advised that this would cease my broadband though and I didnt want to get an Early Termination Charge.

So, I signed up for Sky Talk Line Rental in my name, my dad got a letter from BT saying another provider wanted to take over the line and he had to call by 4pm on a certain date, then Sky took over the line in my name.... I then moved to Post Office after a few months.

Found that was the easiest way to do it without interrupting my BB service
    £4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
    £400 O/D Lloyds TSB
    £2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
    £5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

Sorry for the delay in replying — I haven't been monitoring this thread for a while. I've been on the Electoral Roll for 40 years at this address but I've only ever had a debit card, never a credit card. Maybe that's the problem, the checkers can't find a credit history! Having signed up with O2 only a month ago after a miserable year with my last ISP I'm now reluctant to do anything that'll (possibly) muck up my internet service. So, I think I'll let the matter ride for the time being.

Thanks all for the further advice.

Thanks Jim. On re-reading your post I've now got the message. — I just sign up with another provider, disregard any BT letter and I'll become the subscriber on this number with the new provider. I see that O2 are introducing a line rental service shortly so I think I'll sign up with them.

    Thanks again.

spot on Joe! check that O2 fits your bill though, you need to be an O2 customer, and do you need Anytime calls? personally I work during the day, so its the Post Office for me so that I can use the Mobile calls from 6pm Friday

Well, I'll shortly be activating an O2 PAYG mobile SIM to take advantage of the £5 p.m.discount on the O2 broadband charge. Presumably that'll make me eligible for their line rental service though I'll check that in their T & Cs when published.

Except for BB usage I use the phone very little and I expect the O2 £10 quarterly mobile top-ups to meet all my voice needs. For that reason I'll get whatever's the cheapest line service O2 offers. Apart from that, because of my anomalous subscriber position, I've only ever paid BT bills on demand — and paid their £5 per quarter 'penalty' for the privilege! Since I'll be obliged to pay O2 by DD anyway, that factor alone represents a gain.

    Thanks again for your advice.
