British Gas Boiler repair Charged but told need new boiler

Options
Our boiler broke down. It was leaking and there was no CH or hot water so we called BG out. I was wary of there statement that for £168 thy would fix "the first fault".
When they came, the guy said the pcbs were damaged and replaced a valve to stop the leak. he advised that we needed a new boiler also.
Even though the boiler does not work. I have paid £168 - which I had to pay upfront over the phone before they came out. And because he replaced a prt on a boiler he knew would need replacing I am £168 out of pocket for nothing.
Can I reclaim this money back??
When BG came to give a quote for a new boiler - [approxx £3000-4000] the guy did say that if you bought the boiler you would probably get the £168 back.
Its just that I called BG out in the first place rather than a cowboy, and have been stung!
Any number I can call?

Thanks

yes, phone another plumber. dont deal with BG. a complete conning shambles outfit.
    Get some gorm.
  • I agree with Ormus. Find a good local plumber and get him to install an eficient new boiler. It will cost a whole lot less than BG. Save money on a service contract with BG, once you have a good plumber on board he will be able to provide any necessary future repairs as and when needed.

You are one of many many people who have been stung by BG. People think because they are the biggest company they must be the best. there are many many qualified heating engineers who will do a much better job than BG for much less money and will not be on commission to try and sell you overpriced boiler systems when they are not always needed.

Their quotes for new systems are quite frankly obscene

Ask friends for any recommendations but I doubt you will get your money back as you have called them out and you knew the fee up front
Chalk it up to (expensive) experience

We use a good company called Safegas - not sure where you are based but these guys cover Yorkshire and are very good.

we have now got a boiler fitted for £800 all in and are happy with it.
Its just that I have paid out to BG and they knew the boiler was no good, but still fitted a part so they could take my money

How do i go about claiming the money back?

My friend you have been 'stung' by the biggest cowboy company out there! Do as suggested and ask as many people as possible for recommendations and then check their credentials through the Gas Safe Register online to make sure they are properly qualified.

Hi, We haven't had our boiler looked at for years. Now is the time to service it. However I like using local companies, and it was my sister who told me about http://www.quotemyservice.co.uk who give an immediate online price.

I think they price up repairs....or at least show the engineers hourly charge.

Hope it helps. Its important to support our local guys!!!!

notice the Whois domain registration for this one is breaking the rules , as a business they need to show full registration details but it shows the registration as :-

    Registrant type:
    UK Individual

    Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.

and the only place it comes up on a search (apart from the web site designers) is here . The site also says they hold your personal data but do not display a valid Data Protection registration ( says you can write in for the data held about you but with no contact address thats a non starter !!)

Small claims court. I imagine they will back down & pay up.
