Electric shower repair.

Options
My previous post had been about the possible upgrade of my existing shower to a more powerfull model.
This was due to the fact that my existing shower had developed 2 small pin holes in the base of the small copper cylinder that heats the water up.
What i would like to know is would it be possible to repair these small holes?
Could solder or some other substance be applied over the holes to seal the cylinder again?

It's unlikely you can repair the unit, but it's quite possible you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer.

Technically a repair is possible, but I suspect:

    1) The aggro in repairing it will oughtwigh the cost of a comparable replacement.
    2) If two pinholes have appeared, more will follow as the cylinder is corroding from the inside.
    3) If the design uses a copper cylinder then I suspect the shower is probably at least 10 years old anyway.

So my advice is to give this one a decent funeral and buy another of the same KW rating. Provided you stick to the same rating and it has been fitted properly in the first place then fitting a new one should be easy - ish.

If you decide to go for a more powerful model you may need to upgrade the cable. You probably have 6mm T and E at the moment. This cable will often (but not always) cope with up to 8.5KW. My guess is that you have a 7KW at the moment.

Assuming that it has been fitted correctly in the first place - ie it's own circuit in 6mm from the CU......

Check your cable size and distance from your shower to you main CU/fusebox. This helps to determin the current carrying capacity of the cable.

Then get back to me via here or PM with the info. I'll then be able to tell you more about possible options.

Its OK Alan, someone else has pointed out that Hugo's knowledge of the regulations appears to be on a par to yours mate :)

Although admittedly the quality of his advice in this thread seems well above yours.
