Help! The most ridiculous VW Polo situation ever!

Help! My door locks are broken on my VW Polo S Reg, you have to climb through the boot- now I have lost my key!!! I'm having a number of difficulties finding a cheap and actually plausable way of being able to use my car again! I live in Brighton, where my car is nicely packed in between lots of other closely packed cars... does anyone know anyway at all that doesn't involve towing- as I can't do this without a key.... and doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of money. Willing to try almost anything.
I'm not actually a moron, only sometimes!

  • You need to get a new key cut by a VW dealer - you will need, at the very least the V5 document for the car, plus possibly the MOT and proof of ID/address.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • I've had a car locksmith come to my car and cut me a new key for my VW Beetle for less than the price of a main dealer. Check your local Yellow Pages for car locksmiths and get them to give you a quote.

    You might have two problems…..

The first is the mechanical steering lock, this one is easy, any 12 year old scally from the Lewes Road estates will get that off in less than 30 seconds.

The bigger one is the lost key might have an immobiliser chip in it (mine does and it’s a S reg audi), if this is the case then you need to seek advice from the dealer and see what is involved in getting a replacement.

It might be that the best option is get a new car as dealer prices could well be more than a replacement will cost.
  • Depending how handy you are with tools, you could go to your local scrap yard and get a new set of locks with key and change over. (check with vw to see if your keys are coded they can tell from the reg over the phone)
locksmith way will only work if you key is not coded too.

Last resault, break your steering lock so that the wheels can turn and get someone to tow you.
  • My VW key not only had an immobiliser chip in it, it also had to work with my remote central locking. I did not have to go to a main dealer, the car locksmith got an official VW blank key from VW and did the job quite cheaply compared to the quotes I got from VW dealers.
  • Also, a car locksmith might be able to fix your locks while he's there.

I'm not sure if you are looking for a long term solution , but would guess renewing your MOT is going to be a problem

A friend of mine did this recently with his Renault Espace.
Put key somewhere safe when he and his wife went away for the weekend. He wanted to stop the teenage kids driving the car while away.

Anyway, on his return he forgot where the key was. Car window was partly open as well so that let the rain in. Renault garage could not collect the car because he had parked it with wheel lock on. Cost £150 to get the RAC to lift the vehicle onto a transporter.

He eventually got the key sorted - around £100 from Renault. No idea why he didn't order a spare at the same time (the original spare was lost years ago).

At one point he offered the kids a £50 reward if they found the key. Didn't work mind but it might be worth trying in your case. Also ask at the local police station to see if a key has been handed in.

The locks not working is a really common fault. there is a little bit of metal that fits on to the back of the lock which breaks, any decent locksmith will carry these bits in stock. Replacing the locks with a secondhand set is not a viable option as it is unlikely to be the lock itself that is broken.

As for getting new keys just get a decent locksmith to open the car and cut you a transponder key which can be programmed to the immobiliser.
  • Thank You everyone!
