MSE News: Bank charges: banks win test case appeal

I was downhearted when the decision came out this morning, but as the day has gone on I have gotten over the initial disappointment, and am now thinking- what can we do next? Having read the latest word from Martin, there is some hope of fighting on.
I have started my own fight back by changing my current account to the Credit Union, and it runs exactly the same way as any other bank account, but it means that the greedy bankers get nothing from me, which makes me feel a bit better.
How about Martin running for Prime Minister? :money: I'd give him my vote! At least we could trust him to look after the little people! And he is in no-one's pocket.
Seriously though, I am waiting to hear what Martin has to say next. We should be lobbying our MPs as there is an election looming.

... as you have been encouraged to do?
Or are you one of the majority of banking customers who hopes that this will mean we don't all have to end up paying for some bank customers financial mismanagement."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

CSince when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -

even though i've paid over £2k in a few years in charges, i still think banks should charge. at the end of the day its my fault if i've gone over drawn.
its just the size of the fee that gets me. i've been the victim of £30 charge for coppers overdrawn, which is obviously very unfair.
i think the banks should all agree to lower their fee's, i see some are.
i wouldnt be against paying £15-£20 for going £150 overdrawn, its these horrible charges that increase on a daily basis that i dont like. lloyds used to chartge me £15 then £6 a day i believe - got a nasty shock after a 3 week holiday in vegas / mexico last year when i realised i'd been bummed by lloyds for going a couple of quid overdrawn - stupid travel plug adapter i bought!! haha0 -
This is a good decision for the majority of people who believe in budgeting and careful management of their finances. This could have ended with everyone facing annual/monthly charges for their current accounts. Thankfully, common sense prevailed. :T0

Firstly, this ruling today does not negate all the good work, efforts, wealth of useful information etc that everyone of us who registered on this site has benefitted from. (Otherwise we wouldn't be here would we...) I find it wholly disheartening at the amount of ignorance and vindictive comments posted by a few people. Nobody is perfect, whether as an individual, or an organisation... errare est humane! So I don't think saying 'haha your own stupid fault you got charged by the banks' is even an appropriate let alone, constructive, comment to make. Banks too screw up with the times they do or don't process transactions, be it they are processed by people... Nor do we really know what an individual persons circumstances are... its easy to sit on a sanctimonious seat of judgement and be smug when your own personal circumstances are good. However, anything can happen to anyone, at any time. The question is how do we deal with the here and now and find a resolution? Skitting, insulting, judging and being a prat, is not helpful to anyone nor what this site is supposed to be about... so kids, play nicely.... that's all I have to say. Cat0

Yes, I really do.
So, you didn't switch.
But we're not talking about my bankruptcy here. We're talking about people who can't be bothered to arrange an overdraft in advance and then act all outraged when the bank charges them what it told them it would charge them in the glossy booklet they send out several times a year. As a cause for moral outrage this is a pretty thin one. And, basically, you've lost.
I was once arrogant, too. I thought 'that won't happen to me because I'm careful with my money'. It's nothing to do with being careful and in control, it's what life throws at you that dictates your circumstances.
Oh, and when you give your utility company a bill of their making, and they do actually refund you, do let us know how you managed to get them to part with their money :rotfl: Cheers for the laugh that's given me!0 -
I would urge anyone here struggling to pay the charges to now start looking at their overall financial picture and seek FREE money/debt counselling if needs be. There's also an excellent debt forum here too.
It's gonna be a long time before anything else changes now regarding the bank charges- if at all.0 -
i have received a letter off my bank offering me £3000 of my charges back will they still have to pay me as the letter states?0
