Reference number question

When I tell one bank to send money to my Barclays cheque account and I have to fill in my sort code, account number and reference number: What should I put in for reference number?

To send money to your Barclays current account all you need provide is the sort code and account number and you can ignore the reference number box. However, if the sending bank won't process the payment without a reference (and some have systems which insist on something), give them whatever number or word combination you fancy.

The reference number is there because many building societies use a bank to manage their customers' money. So the BS has an account with, say Nat West which has a sort code and account number. Then to distinguish which money within the account belongs to which BS customer, there is also a reference (which is unique to each building society customer).

If your account is with a bank however, not a BS, then you just need the sort code and account number.

When I send money and no reference is needed I always put in something useful to me or whoever is receiving it as it often shows on statements.
e.g. ForGasBill, FromEgg, FromReaper or whatever
