Does a default disappear from credit files on 6th year anniversary?

Hi, got a default in May 2000, and while I know it is on there for 6 years, now that it is June 2006 will my default have disappeared from my credit file?
The account was marked as settled on 31st May 2000, so we are just over the 6 years. I am hoping to buy a car soon and it would help me greatly if this was not on my report any longer. I want to order my report but wanted to check first if it would have to be updated manually or does it fall off automatically?
Any help is appreciated

I asked this before and was told, by the good people in the know here that it gets removed after 6 years, so yes is the answer.JasonW wrote:Hi, got a default in May 2000, and while I know it is on there for 6 years, now that it is June 2006 will my default have disappeared from my credit file?
