Suddenly got a demand for £175.08 ! Help !

Hi,

Got letter in post today from a debt collection agency(?) called LCS on behalf of Scottish Power and an outstanding invoice of £175.08 of which we know nothing about!

We used to own a derelict and empty cottage in Wales which we recently sold.It was only ever on a temporary electric supply and we were never there to use any electric and there was only a few lights connected for when my OH did some work there years ago.

In the last 10 years or so we have never had a bill through and assumed it was because we didn't use enough to generate one!

Now we have been forwarded a letter from LCS from the estate agents we sold the property through as it was addressed to them (another puzzlement!)

It refers to an outstanding Scottish Power Invoice for the consumption between 2006-2009! The Estate agent has forwarded this letter to us like I said.

We have phoned LCS and explained that we have never used this amount of electricity and that we have never had a bill or any reminders from Scottish Power.
They say the bill was for £125 and the rest is their charges for non payment!
We have asked for a copy of the original bill.

Obviously we are disputing this charge but what is the best way to go about it?

Any advice much appreciated.

TIA

  • Did you actually have the electicity disconnected? They might be billing you for 3 years of standing charges despite your not having actually used any.

Oh never thought of that Wickedkitten :(
    No it was never disconnected.
But surely even if it was standing charges we should have had notification and a bill and reminders before they referred it to a DCA and incurred all the extra charges?

£125 is a bargain for ten year's electricity supply. Why are you disputing the bill? You knew you had a supply so would know it would have to be paid for.

Yes I understand what you are saying but what I am disputing now is why SP never sent us a bill or any reminders just sent it straight to DCA!

Depending on when the contract is for you are liable for at least one and probably two years supply. The £125 sounds like two years standing charges. And depending on how much effort you actually made to contact a supplier you are lucky you do not have ten years of charges to pay for.

It was up to you to contact someone to pay for the supply. Scottish Power were alerted when the new owners did the right thing and arrange to pay for their electricity.

Assumed that as they had our address they would bill us at it! Assumed wrongly obviously!

Nope has to 6 years it been three. if you weren't getting bills its your responsibility to chase it. How is Scottish power meant to know you had not received bills if you didn't tell em.

Because it was "a derelict and empty cottage in Wales".
