HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Ranish as mentioned is good

They all seem a bit scary to use.
I bought a new laptop recently which came with a restore partition plus c: and d: partitions. C: and
were Fat32. I have since converted c: to NTFS.
I would now like to do a clean install of Windows but the install goes thru the dos part but then reboots into my existing Windows installation. I assume the problem is to do with the hidden recovery partition so I wanted to get rid of it (I have created a recovery dvd should it be needed later).
Would one of the suggested tools be suitable?

Ok those partitions should of been left alone as I expect they house your restore files for ghosting if you have that option, Its usually not a good idea to mess with them or change from FAT to NTFS without an excellent reason.
Edit: I see you only did an NTFS on C:/ thats Ok.
Some Partition Info.0 -
I've used BootIt NG to successfully resize partitions. Probably not as easy to use as Partition Manager (now part of Acronis Disk Director), but it is very good at preventing you from deleting data and has good documentation and support, including its own newsgroup - see http://www.bootitng.com/support.html and http://members.shaw.ca/bootitng/.0
