Can my employer make me share a PPE full face spraying mask? My boss refuses to buy me one for my sole use and I really really dont want to share with anyone else (flu germs, cold sores to name but a few reasons why).
Do I have a legal reason to insist he does?

As long as you are provided with antiseptic wipes etc and fully clean the spraying mask before use you should have no issues.0

I agree with the posting ive quoted.
You could always buy one for yourself if they aint to expensive, just to put your mind at rest. When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -

Absolutly unacceptable. Its personal protective equipment, not shared protective equipment.
The ppe regs were ammended to read "" (4) Where it is necessary to ensure that personal protective equipment is hygienic and otherwise free of risk to health, every employer and every self-employed person shall ensure that personal protective equipment provided under this regulation is provided to a person for use only by him.";

Your employer needs to conduct a face fit test, is this being carried out?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

its not just germs that are the issue, the clue is in the title of personal protective equipment. face masks are designed to correctly fit one person, and will only work with an effective seal. sharing makes this almost impossible as the fittings will be changed.0 -

Your manager should look up Stelios Hajii Ioannou. He has a very famous quote and it is something like this "Health and Safety is cheap, Try having an accident"0

i really do need to reply here,
yes, you should have your own mask. no if's no buts you should have your own mask. and no you shouldn't have to buy one - its the employers responsibility to provide.
you should also have a 'fit' test. ever had one?
now, do you 'hook up' to air? if so who does your companies breathing air tests? should be done at the very least every 3 months, our company does em monthly. (also make sure you are given time to purge your mask before each shift.)
your filters for your mask - do you know what they are safe for and their life depending on what chems are you using? etc...
positive and negative pressure tests? know how?
mate seriously, if you cant answer these questions, stop working there - you'll kill yourself slowly. i know this sounds harsh but really do look into it and get some answers - if they cant provide them then report them!
there is no smiley here for the above - just sort it!
eta - with respect, dannyboi has all good intentions but swine flu would be the last thing on my mind!0 -
Mask-sharing, Jesus, this is the 21st century for Gods sake. Who the hell does your employer think he is? Ebeneezer Scrooge or something.
Dose your company have a health and safety rep? if so take it up with them.
PPE is for the person it is ISSUED to, and no one else (speaking as a RoES certified H & S rep, Certified 'mask fit test' administrator & First Aider)Never Knowingly Understood.

Buy your own if the cheapskate employer doesn't want to spend money so that everyone can have their own. They don't cost much.
Someone should anonymously complain to the health &s officials. And then see how the stingy git coughs up.0
