Yes I remember the outside lavvy. Complete with Izal. A tin bath hanging off the wall. That would be in the 50`s. I had 2 maiden aunts that lived together in the house they were bought up in. In 1960 the elder aunt bought a new build bungalow for £1,000. I would be only 10 but can recall helping out at digging over the garden.
The bungalow was luxury. Inside toilet and all.
My mum and dad in their first house together received a grant to bring the toilet inside...laurel7172 wrote: »You know, that's the first sensible suggestion Ive ever heard as to why my kitchen worktops are 2" lower than normal (it was so much fun getting a dishwasher to fit). It's a good sized kitchen, but all our ceilings are low. Maybe we were the showhouse when the house was new?
Is it because all new builds have to be disabled friendly? Every house on my mum's development is....I have to get used to lower light switches etc...0 -
Apart from problems with appliances, I'd like lower worktops. The ones I have here are about higher than my waist. Can be tricky as they're quite high to me. I have to "reach over" everything, rather than just reach.0

It's not a new build any more-it predates the disabled friendly legislation. Good thought, though.import this0 -
Years ago we looked at a 2bed new build house. I walked in through the front door and said, "This is a nice size hall." The agent coughed and said, "This is actually the living room."I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I saw a converted one bed steading and I remember walking in the door and trying not to show the shock on my face as I realised that once you walked through the door you were straight into your open plan living room/kitchen with one corner of the living room like an en suite bathroom...
and then trying to feign interest when really you just want to turn and walk out again...:rotfl:0 -

Luxury! We had a scrub with a wire brush in a muddy puddle in the road.
Actually, I did have to dry my ( quite long ) hair in front of a two-bar electric fire as we didn't have a hairdryer.
I love having a downstairs wc and an en-suite as with three teenagers I'd never get into the bathroom in the morning. My favourite subliminal message is;0
