Good choices, Martin. Particularly your no 1. I did it especially for you.:kisses3: :A

Okay, sensible answer now. I love that song. I can't listen to it without getting !!!!!ly eyes. Glad you found it moving. I hope this means that you'll sit down occasionally and really listen to music now. Can't be beaten.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • It is a very moving piece, often chosen for funerals too. It was my Dad's favourite Eva Cassidy number and after playing it for his funeral I am unable to listen to it without bawling too. Glad to hear Martin isn't completly without musical soul.

Thought of you when I heard Martin on the radio!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I've got the Eva Cassidy CD Songbird with " Over the Rainbow" on it and it gets me everytime. Just thinking about it has me with tears in my eyes.

Seems Radio 2 and us lot have got to you at last!
As for SOTR being your No1 an excellent song -love all the Wizard of Oz stuff did the show as a child and school is doing it again this year- but for it to be special for such a personal reason was moving. (big hugs for that)
To have the Floyd in there is proof that you are not musically illiterate but that you have excellent taste.:T
Don't know why you missed out Duran Duran!!;)
You really do listen to loads of music you just wanted the gig with Radio 2!!!!!! You have been reading the DFW board and decided to get an extra income!!!!!:rotfl:

  • Hi Martin,

I happened to be listening a couple of times the week they ran the show with you and Peter, and couldn't get over the number of people who failed to listen to what you were saying. To be frank, the whole show was based on a false premise, that you both might have happened to miss hearing a piece of music that would stir you, and that if you could only be introduced to it, you would be reformed, music-appreciating citizens.

Clearly, you and Peter don't extract any emotional content directly out of music, as you said on the first day, and repeated each time. I'm the same with abstract art - I can look at it, but it does nothing for me. All the people who rang in to accuse you of being cold and emotionless were completely missing the point. Unfortunately, Peter seemed to react to what he has no doubt heard from people many times before by going to the opposite extreme, and declaring that (presumably because he didn't appreciate their creations) the various performers were all "talentless". Again, although I don't derive any pleasure from abstract art, that doesn't mean that I can assume a complete lack of talent on the part of its proponents.

As you say in your blog, the only time you attach any emotional significance to a song is because it triggers a memory of an emotional event. I'm sure that plays a significant part in most people's reaction to some music as well, but most people also have a direct emotional reaction to some music, even if it is the first time they've heard it. As it happens, you don't. Basing an entire week of programmes on trying to "convince" you seemed completely barmy.

It so nice to know that the younger generation enjoy the music of Brian Wilson. God only knows will be 40 next year

I came to this a music virgin, and having been touched for the very first time

I find it hard to believe that someone as musically illiterate as you claim to be could have written this!
