NPower pre-payment meter question ... I'm cross!

  • A different situation I know but a friend of mine on a npower prepayment meter (gas/ key) received a bill for just over a £100,she at first ignored it but final demands etc followed so she eventually rang them and it seems they have no record of her putting money "on her key".She has kept her receipts for the past few weeks which is fortunate as today she received another letter threatening court action! Mindboggling.
  • Hi, I have something to add :)
2007 Jun I have left a propery and now 2010 Feb I receive a bill for 70pounds. It was a prepayed meter. Can you please say somethin about my case
    Thank you

Then they started again when their sales team blitzed my neighbourhood with nuisance cold callers. I live in a gated development, and they would trick people into letting them into the gates. Their teenage staff would say "Hi it's gas and electricity here to read the meters", disguising the fact that they were from Npower whenever able, then come in and go round knocking on every door with their sales pitch. The whole point of a gated development is to keep cold callers out, so this was an abuse of power.
So they have gained access under false pretences. You have no idea who they really are ... maybe burglars looking for unoccupied premises ... obviously you better call the Police.

I then tell them that I'm not with Npower any more and usually have to turn the intercom off when they start reeling off their sales pitch.
Maybe quietly put the phone down (it's all at their expense after all), and go and have a cup of coffee. Or two. Personally I've always found the line 'I'd love to hear what you have to say, but first I'd like to talk to you about Jesus ...' to be extremely effective for some reason.

    Welcome to the forum.

It was perfectly possible to run up a debt on a pre-pay meter(loads of post on MSE about this)

The reason would be that the meter was not adjusted to take into account a price rise; so you were paying at the pre-increase rate. e.g. the actual cost was £300 but your meter only set to collect £230.

The normal solution was to 'claw back' that £70 by setting the meter to take the owed £70. However you obviously left before this happened.

Some firms write off any debt occured like this, but Npower don't.

Just be careful that you don't get an entry on your credit record.
  • Thank you for the advice, I will wait to see what they are going to replay after I have questioned the bill.
Any idea how long it takes to have an entry on credit record cleared :)
  • Hi.all.
I'm new to this and didnt know where tp post this..
    cut a long story short.
My daughter has a flat and uses both meters for gas and electric...but to cut her outgoings down she only used electric for heating...hence an electric cooker...she has never used her gas meter or topped it up... she has just received a bill from npower..£120... this is for a standing charge..ie renting the machine..like a phone line rental she told me on the phone.. npower charge you to rent the machine to receive your gas. is this correct. npower is charging £3.25 pw.

Yes this is correct, althoug it is not just for the rental of the meter, it covers all fixed costs - exactly the same as line rental for a phone.

I would get her to double check this. nPower charge £152 p.a. standing charge (about £2.92 p.w) for gas PPMs. It might possibly vary by region, but I've checked a couple of regions and that's what they quoted for both.
