Hi folks

I just need some tips and advice on buying a AMD in its OEM form rather than in its retail box.

It is just that I cannot find any AMD 4000 AM2 x2 retail packs anywhere and I have seem OEM chips available on the cheap.

I assume all I need to do is buy the right heatsink and compound and thats it??????

being OEM I assume you don't get an installation manual with it. Can I download it instead???

As far as I can remember, a retail kit comes with a thermal pad and standard fan. I think this combination is guaranteed by AMD to not fry the chip.

An OEM kit probably has plain packaging, and does not include a fan or thermal compound.

OEM does not include the fan, thermal grease or mounting kit. However there are many after market fans out there that are better than the stock AMD ones. Have a look at the Artic or Coolermaster ranges. All of these will contain the mounting kit you need for your motherboard however you will have to ensure that you have clearance on the motherboard for these fans as they tend to be way larger than the stock fan.

To be honest, the OEM version of the chip is usually only £10-15 cheaper than the retail version.

As to instuctions... Have you ever fitted a CPU before? These are no different, but I'm sure you can find instructions on the AMD site.
