CI or CAM, common interface, or conditional Access module, in other words a card reader.

    Do Humax not sell them?

Anywho some info on them here, but I guess any references to Sultana sports could safely be ignored.

  • Many Thanks Penrhyn,, I've just had a look on the Humax site but can't see any info at all, so I've just emailed them to enquire. He says that he wants to get a freesat sky card, but will he get that many more channels???, I know very little about this sort of stuff so sorry if I seem abit thick!! :o

I'm not sure but I would have thought that Freesat from Sky cards will only work in Sky set top boxes, even though both services come from the same group of satellites.

AFAIK there are no UK subscription channels available on the Freesat platform. The Humax Foxsat does have a CI-Module, for which you would require a CAM module and a viewing card. ESPN is available on Freeview channel 34 using the CAM slot, but not on Freesat. Modules and cards are available on eBay, usually being ex-Setanta ones.
I think your son is confusing Freesat from Sky with Freesat: they are similar channel line ups, but not identical platforms. A Sky card won't work in a Freesat box.
What channels is your son hoping to get on Sky non-sub that he can't already get on Freesat?
If he wants these channels, best way is to get a secondhand Sky box (eBay/car boot) and use that with or without a viewing card (cost £20 from Sky). This will require a second feed from the existing dish, and possibly a new LNB.

Note (I've got a freesat HDR box)
There is an option for "freesat" or "non-freesat" modes.

Non-freesat modes will give you every single channel that can be picked up (most will be encrypted and not viewable) but you'll get free-to-air channels like "Sky news" "FashionTV" and a few others.

You *can* pick up a cam module and a sky card (not sure if the sky-freeview required the "call-home" function of normal sky cards to stay active.)

But you'll need to get a CAM that's been pre-programmed for SKY. (otherwise it will cost you to buy a programmer and do it yourself)

I think the ONLY reason to get "SkyFreesat" is you get Ch4 HD (I think!) hopefully it will come to freesat soon enough.

But the easiest way is to get an old Sky box and the £20 Card.

A Sky Card does not require a " call home " to remain activated, it is kept active via the satellite feed.
