Help! What is the amount the law says you need to live on?

I'm not sure of the exact amount the law says you should have to live on but I think it's about £200 a week for a couple.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
No, it's just under £100 for a couple. Just under £200 for a pensioner couple (both over 60). No sure about when only one is older.
OP, your op is still a little optimistic. No harm asking but people are going to scratch their heads and occasionally pipe up.
Note that you will have to consider again once the contributions based JSA runs out after six months. That'll be a loss of £280 per month. If you are struggling on £1000 start planning now how to cope on £700 per month. There may be scope for working tax credits then but as you don't have children under 18 you are expected to live on very little.0 -
I edited and removed my original post due to follow up posts most of which were irrelevant but Glyndwr has seen fit to re-post it. Please explain the reason for re-posting as it was obvious I no longer wanted to participate!0

You may not have liked the answers but they could hardly be called 'attacks'.
Also, people took the time to answer and others may be helped by reading the entire thread.
This site is about sharing information after all.
When you've put your dummy back in, do have a look around the boards as there is loads of useful info on budgeting and you may find your money goes a lot further if you are prepared to listen.0 -
Sadly the OP is like many that frequent this board recently. They want us to tell them how they can get extra money, or confirm that they are getting everthing they are entitled to, but are unwilling to take on board good, honest advice - preferring to make allegations of 'attacks'.0
-
I missed the thread until now but have re-read the remaining contributions and see no attacks but some over-sensitivity on the part of the OP.
It is the nature of forums to answer 'unasked' for questions, simply to educate an OP on other things they may not have considered which can be helpful.
Yes, the OP may have said "What is the amount the law say you should live one" but what was clear they may have been struggling to live on their current income and were seeking additional sources for it, they were disappointed to be receiving in excess of some government benchmarks.
Given that they appeared to be eligible for no other state benefits, allowances or credits, its fairly logical for experienced posters to advise a strategy to review their outgoings and cut down on their expenses. The fact that it wasn't welcomed is a shame.
We can't wave a magic wand here and open the door to secret sources of state support that don't actually exist. If a person can't increase their income, then they've no choice but to decrease their expenses. It wasn't an attack on the OPs lifestyle but an introduction in how simple changes can reap big savings.0 -
I too am glad that the original post was reposted by Glyndwr because the information may be useful to someone else.
Also if someone can't manage on their money, I would have thought it was helpful to suggest ideas that might enable them to do so. I don't quite know why the OP has taken offence and thrown their toys out of the pram.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
