    If the water tank making noise is the hot one, AND the immersion is on 24/7 it may well be the internal thermostat on immersion heater is duff [the one under terminal cover, not readily accessible without tools]

    Thus the noise like exploding is the water near boiling, like kettle on hob

    If when you turn off the Hot water switch the tanks stops it's noise and water remains hot after few days, then faulty immersion heater thermostat is likely cause

    Only cost a few pounds to replace, but as an electrician I can DIY without trouble, your landlord will probably have to pay someone to do it, but that is not your concern

    Would an easier indication be if the water coming out of the hot tap was extremely hot?
