electrical wiring help please

Options
:confused:We have just had a new boiler and radiators fitted but they wouldn't sign off the wiring as we have an old consumer unit would this invalidate our insurance under new regs? The boiler is wired into where the old on was in the kichen.

Thank you for any help as I'm worred that if anything happens we'll be without a home:eek:

(this is also posted on the insurance board)
Baby arrived 6wks early on 23/06/09, weighing 2lb 15oz. Now 20wks weighing 12lb 11oz :j

  • They shouldn't have done the wiring if they were not prepared to sign it off.
As for insurance, there is normally no requirement for certificates as such, however you are required to maintain your property and having certs would indicate that you have done so. I think you'll be fine.
  • Hiya,

I have also recently had a whole new system installed (previously there was no boiler..).

We also have an "old" consumer unit - which does not comply with 16th/17th edition regs, i.e. it does not have RCD protection. I didn't want to replace it at this time as plannign a refurb next year and want to renew electrics then..

You CAN however still get your installation fully signed off and leggit with all apperwork.

    Either;
    a) Install an RCBO into your old comsumer unit (if you are not aware, this is absically an individual RCD and breaker in one...it simply slots into your old consumer unit - usually cost £20-£40.

    b) Replace the standard FCU (fused connection unit) which connects your boiler to the circuit ring with an RCD protected FCU (£20-£30).

We had a discussion with nappit about this and they confirmed it was all ok. Your plumber/installer should do this for you and test the performance of the RCD (i.e. how quick it cuts out) and record this on your certificate.

Your certificate will however state that your current consumer unit does not comply with current....as you already know.

    Hope that helps.
  • They should sign it off with a reservation that it is wired into existing wiring. Withhold payment to the amount required to get someone else to inspect and sign off in those terms and give them 38 days to comply.
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • Forgot to say - with ours, the fitting of a FCU with RCD was included at no additional expense....

As our quote specifically stated to install to meet current regs and provide all certification.
