If you look down the page on the dti factsheet for the sale of goods act it does state that:
"However, it might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip etc., and this should be sufficient."

I'd like to see someone try and return a asda baked beans to tesco and say "I don't need a reciept by law" LOL

Even funnier if they show them a cheque book stub as proof of purchase that just says "Tesco - £14.85 - 1/6/06". I can see a few shop staff thinking the customer had just been released from the funny farm :p

In my student days (i.e. before CCTV) we'd have hours of pointless fun by buying some cheap Tesco beans then putting them on the shelves in Sainsburys. Always wondered what would happen at checkout.
    Can I help?

    Another question on this topic..

Brought a dvd player sometime in late April/early May .. it now wont play any DVD's.

Sadly, have no box and no reciept and paid by cash. However, it is an acoustic solutions model and in the current catalogue this does state 'only at argos'.

Head Office said they wont refund without a reciept, kind lady in local Argos said they will if they can match the product to the one in their catalogue but ..guess what... ive looked and ITS NOT IN THERE!

I must have ordered it from the old catalogue so now im stuffed.. i think? Can anyone enlighten me to what i can do.

Im really annoyed with myself for NOT keeping the reciept and more importantly that a machine i have had for only a few months and kept my 2 year quiet for long enough to put my 10 month old to sleep.. no longer works after only a few months.

"Argos only items" means that, all you need to prove is that its within its 12months. If you have some idea of the day and time, (if within three months) Argos can look it up on their system. if they don't sell it anymore at a push they can exhange the item, but its really up to the manager. If anything if he doesn't the Area Manager normally kicks them in to place.

In short .. if you can find in argos (in any past catelog) you are half way there to getting it fix (or exchanged).

p.s. they might try and say its a good well thing, but just smile and nodd your head

    Hi all,

Many thanks for your support. I returned the item and to make matters worse it wasnt even in the old catalogue. (Hubby must have recieved a substitute one as it did say Argos LTD on it). Manager wasnt happy to replace as i couldnt prove when it was brought, which was fair enough. He did however, after about 30mins in total of me being nice and the baby being quiet lol .. give me a basic one instead! I thought this was more than fair under the circumstances, mine was multi region and this one isnt but im npt complaining, im actually really happy! Many thanks again.. im one happy mum with 3 very happy bunnies again!! x
  • I got a present a few days ago that doesn't really suit me so I want to exchange it for a different model that's about £10 more. I'm fairly certain it was bought in Argos but the person took most of the labels off.
Can I print my own label with the catalogue no & stick it on or are the labels fairly standard & mine would look too obvious?

    Thanks

The labels are all the same type/style. Homemade stickers stick out a mile.
You haven't mentioned what it is, when it was bought and are only
fairly certain it was bought in Argos
so i can't be very specific, however...
First check to see if it's exempt from the 16day mbg. If it is, then you won't get a refund at all.
If it isn't excluded then See if you can get any proof or purchase from the person who gave you the item (date and approx time would be fine). Otherwise it's upto the goodwill of the managment (or staff dependant on value of the item) in the store you return it to. State that you want to buy a more expensive one from them as it is seen much better to refund money that will end back up in the till than give it out to any person who brings something in without proof or purchase.
