Time to negotiate?!!?

Have been quoting around with three different builders on a job and two have come out with broadly the same quote at £10,400.

Do builders normally negotiate on price, and if so what could my opening offer be, and what should I settle on?

As a builder myself I would only drop my price if I had bumped the price up in the first place there may be a bit of room in ther quote but it also depends on how busy they are.
PS what work are you having done ?

I would not be looking to get a discount, you will pay for it later! Does one builder not strike you as better chap than the other. Or which has the tidiest van if his van is tidy then he might leave your house tidy.

You can try to negotiate on price, but this will probably affect the quality and the timeliness of the end result. If you try it, the first one to walk away is likely to be the one you should have chosen.

Thanks lads, think that the cheaper quote was from the better builder anyway.
