insurance following subsidence

We are about to purchase a new house that has been underpinned in 1986. Is the insurance company that currently insures the property duty bound to continue the insurance in our names? or can they turn us down and are we free to get insurance elsewhere.

Comments

  • It is best to use the same company who normally will insure you.

Make sure it is the company that paid for the work in 1996 and that the sellers did not change their insurers afterwards - some people are stupid enough to do this and it makes it very difficult for them to sell the house as insurance then becomes prohibitively high.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
