Coffee as compost?

I have always composted my used tea-leaves, but I thought that coffee grounds contained toxins and so have thrown them away. Now I see (elsewhere on this board) that people are taking coffee grounds from Starbucks to use on their compost heaps. Have I been wrong? Please let me know your experiences with composted coffee-grounds.

I've read somewhere that coffee grounds are ok on compost heaps.0

Tea bags were a bad idea though
- we're still finding them in the flower beds after five years...still raining0 -
Rather than composting it, I often just dilute it down with loads of water and chuck it all on the garden or the house plants. It seems to work well.0

Plants must like the caffeine hit as much as I do!0

You can use coffee grounds straight on the ground as a slug repellant / deterrent as well as a mulch that will help retain moisture. I have a separate pot in the kitchen for coffee grinds and put them around the base of plants the slugs go for. Seems to work fine. Have also composted them with no side effects (that I've noticed!)0
