Roof Tile Blown Away

Hi,
Any advice on what I could be expected to pay a roofer to replace a roof tile which has blown off my roof. I know that the builders/roofers will be mega busy today following the very strong winds in my area and want to avoid getting ripped off.

Likewise, any MSE'ers know of any in the Preston area ?

    Opps - forgot.

Knowing nothing about buildings / roofs etc. What damage could be done if the tile does not get replaced quickly,

i.e. does the tile also keep the rain out of the house, or is there a waterproof layer under the tile ?

    House if 7 years old.
  • The two houses I've had both had a layer of felt under the tiles / slates, so there should be an element of waterproofness. I had a dozen tiles blown off last year and it took a week and a half to get someone out to fix the problem over that period of time. It cost £400 to get it all sorted out...
    Regards

On a seven year old house there will be a layer of felt below which, provided its not ripped, will keep out the rain. Once of a day you could get a guy with a ladder and cat ladder to replace your tile and have change out of £100, but current Healtha and Safety regs are supposed to prevent people working from ladders, so it requires some form of scaffolding which bumps up the cost. However, there are some small firms who don't follow the regs. Try your local free paper.

    Thanks for the responses.

I've been in the loft and cant see any water damage so the felt is doing a good job so far of keeping it dry.

I have a local guy coming round later, hope he can do a quick replacement.

In the recent gales, a ridge tile lifted off the roof.

The roofer came to fix it back into place (it wasn't damaged) and then offered to 'point' the full row of ridge tiles..........because they were starting to lift.

There was also a damaged tile (when the ridge tile landed on it) which he replaced. Total cost was £50.

Hope I can find someone who provides as good value as this.
I have lost two ridge tiles (both smashed to bits) and also would like the full row repointing.......
  • Silly suggestion I know.
But could there / should there be a section here for recommended tradesmen? I know a good roofer in my neck of the woods (Stockport) who came out yesterday to put back a ridge tile and a barge board (£30 all in, PM me if you want his details.) But I'd love to find a trustworthy economic garage round here! :-)
