Best places to look for car insurance?

My bloke has just cancelled his car insurance as they have charged him £200 simply cos he's changed addresses.

What's the best place to look for the best deal on car insurance. I'm fairly clueless.

Hi - why not follow the 2 comparison sites recommended by Martin on this site ?

    https://www.confused.com
    https://www.insuresupermarket.com

These should give you a selection of the cheaper prices.Beware of cancelling the existing policy now as you may get hit with further cancellation charges.

    Why not try A-Plan insurance?

They are a small company without an online quote engine, but that means that they'll are able to structure your premium for you on a 1:1 basis using a more wider range of variables. Simply fill in your basic insurance details and your best quote so far, on their website and await their return call.

A great service, and for me they came in £80 cheaper than the best comparable offer when using the quote engines, and they also protected my NCB too!.

Perhaps it may be worth Martin contacting them, as they do special offers for members of several motoring forums (Which is where I heard about them), Maybe MSE members could benefit from these discounts too?

They do initially, but I find nearly everytime and every quote on Insuresupermarket that the initial price rises by about £50 when you actually come to finalise the policy. Somebody is perhaps being a bit too optimistic with the initial quote stage - it's the same for Home Insurance with them too!.

My advice is to call every 0800 number in the yellow pages that your patience will allow.

Agree with chris73 that I wouldn't bother with price comparison sites as they usually don't give you the option to add things you want to or they assume that you want certain things that you don't want at all. Thus when you call to change things the premium goes up and up.

My advise would be to do a search for "insurance" and go through all the online quoting engines you find. The likes of confused and insurancesupermarket which this site promotes (and gets paid for for doing) only cover a proportion of the direct insurers and virtually none of the brokers.

I use confused .com and saved a small fortune on my car quote, even my current insurers quote was £130 less than the renewal price, in the end i ended up saving £200 on a £400 renewal quote

I use and recommend the usual search engines already listed.
Then totally out of character I called Hastings, only because I had a junk mail letter arrive from them that morning in the post.
Guess what.... They were cheaper than the search engines. The sales person, kept on reducing the premium until it beat anything I had already found, like for like.

So it seems the best thing to do is shop about and then haggle!

It is always worth checking http://www.topcashback.co.uk/RetailersByCatInsurance.htm?pge=1&sort=pound&dir=desc .
Some companies offer up to £90 cashback.
Some brokers such as AA and Screentrade offer £55-£60 cashback.

I've found that Norwich Union are the cheapest for me. They didn't charge me when I moved! Did your bloke move to a place where the crime rate is higher than his previous address? Somethines this can affect a policy.
