Painting furniture

I have aquired 4 chairs the seats of which will have to be recovered, I fancy painting the frames, they appear to have some sort of varnish top coat, any suggestions how I should remove this and what paint to use once the varnish has been removed. I prefer a matt finish I can protect with wax rather than a gloss finish.
I am going to recover the the seats, they smell just now, I think I may also have to replace the under padding as well as the covers.

you can sand it all off. a very time consuming job.
or use a chemical stripper (do it outside).
almost any paint will do. make sure you prime them first. you might want to consider spraying them? a wee bit expensive but prob a better job.Get some gorm.0
