Do any estate agents accept renters on DMP?

  • I'm not sure if this is helpful or not but I have a property in an area where there is a lot of subsidised housing, I'm happy to rent my place out to anyone (reasonably), subject sensible checks, short-term initial test periods etc. including people with pets. I'm disconnected from it emotionally and want to get and income coming in asap.

My local council (as do most) have an empty property scheme (demand far outstrips supply), they will be assisting me with finding suitable tenants as well as maintenance grants to ensure the place is fit to rent. If you look here at the direct gov site (sorry I can't post links) under 'Home And Community' and then 'Buying And Selling Your Home' and finally 'Letting Your Home' at the 'risks of leaving a property empty' section, there will be a link to finding your local council - they may even have a database of suitable properties, and mine even offers some tenants rental support of a fixed percentage contribution each month.

    I think it's a great idea!
  • I thought local authorities only supplied those privately-rented properties to families already on the waiting-list, so if that is the case our OP might not find this a viable solution. That's how it works here, in any case
  • hmm, well there's nothing on our councils site to suggest this but i guess each area is different - it'd certainly be a stumbling block!

but maybe they can help point you in the right direction??

also, have you thought about a guarantor? I had my mum when I was a student!

Ring and ask what list of landlords they have. They may well have a landlord approval scheme with a list.
    Worth asking.
  • Thanks a lot everyone. Our problem is a bit unique in that, even though I am on a DMP, I am budgeting so carefully and we can actually afford the bills and rent. It's not that I need a "cheap" housing option, just that I wanted to know if letting agencies would even entertain us as possible tenants with my DMP.

I just phoned a letting agent who has a lovely 2 bedroomed house on their books which would be perfect for us, and it's slightly cheaper than we pay now. I explained my whole situation to him and all he asked was whether I was in full time employment. When I said I've worked here for just over 17 years he said there would be no problem. So it looks like things might not be as bad as I thought. Thanks so much for all the helpful replies and suggestions though.
