British Gas - cheapest tariff with no cancelllation fee?
My son has just moved into his first home - current suppliers are British Gas for both electricity and gas.
I told him to phone up and ask for the cheapest tariff with no cancellation fee so that he could look into switching to another supplier. I had already looked at their website and saw that the OnlineSaver tariff would be the cheapest with no cancellation fee - Websaver does have a fee. I told him to ask for that but to ensure there was no cancellation fee.
I also asked him to ask for the previous owner's consumption history - however they would only give him their monthly spend. Consumption figures would have been best but at least it's some idea I suppose.
He has just told me that British Gas told him their only tariff without a cancelllation charge was their standard tariff so he has gone onto that!
He will be changing but meanwhile ( seeing as it is now the dearest time of year) I want him on the cheapest tariff with no cancellation fee.
Can anyone confirm which tariff?

Jem,
At this time of the year the savings on the BG websaver would be quite substantial.
Depending on when he intended to move from BG, it might be worth while 'biting the bullet' and paying the exits fees - they are not that huge.
Otherwise he should move from BG's standard tariff to another company asap.
P.S.
Pity my tariff is still not available!!(private joke!)0 -
You are only tied into the cancellation fee for about 6 months anyway and then it is only £30 per fuel to cancel. I'd change to the websaver0

Scottish Power Online Saver 7 is cheapest with a 23% saving over BG standard. They also have a £110 cashback deal throuh Quidco.
Cheapest fixed product (Atlantic) until August 2011 is a saving of 21% - no cashback. Also available is Eon's fixed tariff with a saving of 19% and with £100 cashback.
Websaver 4 would have a 15% saving and no cashback.
I think switching really is going to be advantageous but question still remains. Which BG tariff would be cheaper than standard tariff for the 6/8 weeks that it takes for the switch to go through.P.S.

Yes that would be good for him now but BG ain't that generous.

Apparently it's till end of February 2010 so it's not too bad a tie-in. As it takes 6/8 weeks to switch at the dearest time of year it may be worth staying till then and then switch.0
