See if you have a local stamp fair. My OH got some and as we hadn't a clue took them to one. They were really helpful and looked at them and gave us an idea of their worth. Unfortunatly that was practically nothing as they weren't anything special. Hope yours are more promising!0

Condition is everything, partic state of the perforations, whether or not they're post marked, written on, etc. Even if they're post marked then the date and the location can even matter. Whether or not the postmark covers the illustration, the perferations, or just on the envelope........ Detail is everything.0

I have just inherited a lot of beautiful albums full of stamps going back 80 years of collecting so will watch this thread as I have no idea where to start with getting them valued. Any ideas will be very welcome.0

as i said all are absolute mint, my nan inherited them through the course of a colapsed business i the early 70's, the owner of which was a stamp collector, we collected all of his collection but we lost some and sold others random boxes back to him and this is whats left, still in the box he kept them in
95% have post marks or even 100% maybe
none are written on but some do have the black stamps on them (some detailed) as well as the sticker
also, half of them have the descriptions still inside the envelope
i have a zip folder with pictures of all of them if your willing to take a look?
if so pm your email and ill send you the folder
many thanksBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -

Not right, there are even some postmarks that can improve the value of the stamp. Also, postmarks come in several grades of heaviness.0 -

Not true actually. Some postmarks are valuable, and may be considered postal history, e.g. early airmail markings.
what you need to do is get someone who is a proper dealer to look at the material and only then will you have a clear idea of value.Blagged: free samples of handwash from Molton Brown; booklet of walks from Brecon Carreg;
Free Diabetes monitor, free bee-friendly seeds, a MINI coin and a splash-proof book from Radox.:T0 -

This is correct. Take the penny black. There are 12 different plate nos which can only be identified by close examination, all varying in rarity. Mint or unused are a lot rarer than used. 4 wide margins beats 3 margins, which beats 2, 1 or close-cut margins, etc. Then you have cancellation types - black maltese cross denotes earlier use, or with a number present (more valuable). If on cover then date of use counts. A penny black used on cover 6th May 1840 will set you back about £20,000 but you might get a poor quality single copy for under a fiver.0
