Allinson's *cheaper* than Tesco own brand? Where, if you don't mind my asking? I had to buy yeast from the co-op last night, and Allinson's (the only brand they stock) costs over twice as much as Tesco once you account for the fact that there's just six packets in the box, not eight.import this0

I get the doves yeast in a orange packet , 125grms and lasts way much longer, about a poundThe original janiebaby0

Yes the Allinsons yeast would be fine for use by hand, or in a breadmaker. I pay about 30p for a twin sachet (2x7g) at Lidls. There is a recipe on the packet for white bread.

I believe that "Dried Active Yeast" needs activating in water before you use it, so it isn't usually suitable for use in breadmakers. Quick yeast (the kind that comes in individual sachets or in the orange Doves Farm packets) can be added directly to flour - no need to activate it first.
The Doves Farm website has a good explanation of the different options here: http://www.dovesfarm.co.uk/flour-and-baking/yeasts-and-raising-agents/0 -
I use fast active yeast its 68p for 8 out of Sainsburys Own brand). this is used in the bread machine and when i make it by hand. Allisons i think is really expensive even when measured by per 100g.
Never used fresh yeast so haven't got a clue.In the bread machine i use a 1and 1/2tsp per 2lb loaf if that helps.0 -
I always try to buy yeast in a little tin so I can only use the small amount I need. If I buy sachets I seem to end up throwing half the sachet away.
I have used many brands of supermarket yeast and not had any difficulties with any of them. (I used to have a catering business so I've tried quite a few.)Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0
