Moving from London to Eastleigh, Hampshire

Hi Everyone

I'm selling my flat in London to move to Eastleigh and feeling apprehensive about moving somewhere I don't know very well. I've probably got too much time to think about all the pros and cons as my vendor has gone on holiday and we haven't exchanged yet! Hence my added nerves to what will be a very big move for me. Any ideas how I can prepare myself to moving out of London and into a new unfamiliar place? I'd be grateful for any suggestions and also to hear from anyone who lives in Eastleigh.

I've just moved away from Southampton but still have friends in Eastleigh. Coming from London, you'll find it a lot smaller.... and cheaper.

I belive it made the Channel 4 Top Ten Places to live once!

What are you interested in? Shopping, Pubs, Nightlife, Sports?
  • I don't live there but I work in Southampton and drive past it every day. There doesn't seem to be very much in Eastleigh itself but you've got Southampton and Winchester just a few miles away and London isn't too far either.

    Cheers

    James.
  • My 57yo father moved there about 3 years ago and has since had my 26yo brother move in with him.

From my Dads point of view he likes it as it's much quieter and cheaper than London, so for a retired person it works fine.

From my brothers point of view it's not great as there's not much in the way of nightlife and he is finding opportunities for work limited without travelling in to Winchester/Southampton (which is a slight problem for him as he doesn't drive).

Hope this is of some use to you.

Yes, one of the reasons I chose Eastleigh is because of the good transport links! I know it will seem small compared to London but with Winchester and Southampton nearby thought it would be ok. I thought maybe I would go horse riding as I used to do it years ago and maybe join some exercise classes to meet new people. I like trying different restaurants - any suggestions?!
  • I work in Eastleigh and commute out to it from Southampton each day. There's a few playing fields and a motorway between the two places.

Ordinary House prices (apart from the very posh areas) are slightly higher than ordinary Southampton ones.

Train service is OK to London but more trains stop at Southampton Airport/Parkway so if you are living down the bottom end of Eastleigh you can walk down past aforesaid playing fields to Parkway Station. There is also the airport which isn't too bad - I live under the Southampton end of the flight path and it is not a major issue - but you will hear the planes in some parts of Eastleigh/Bishopstoke.

My part of the world! Well used to be - I grew up down the road on the outskirts of Southampton.

There's barely a gap between Eastleigh and Southampton, and as for travelling for work, it's about 10 minutes on the train between the two, the same time to drive, and then Winchester is about 15 mins in the other direction. The airport isn't a bother really. There's only small planes going in and out, and they're pretty infrequent!

How come you've chosen Eastleigh? I just mean as opposed to any of the other areas, Southampton or Winchester, or Chandlers Ford...

Thanks for info. I first saw a lovely flat in Otterbourne but unfortunately they couldn't reduce the price and wanted the same price as they paid 3 years ago and then took it off the market. I also looked in Bishopstoke and Romsey but couldn't find anything in my price range that I liked enough. I would have liked to live in Winchester but it was also pricey and not a lot on offer that I could afford as I wanted a Victorian property.I saw a house in a nice little road in Eastleigh and it seemed to fit, now I'm having slight anxiety about it all! One of the reasons I'm moving there is because my boyfriend lives in Chandlers Ford and will literally be round the corner! Also I can still hop on the train and come up to London quite easily.
