If anyone can explain the how to do the above in understanble english to a (n almost) technophobe then that'd be more than very helpful. I'm aware that net connection through a laptop via a mobile 'phone is expensive and slow. thanks

To GPS - use a bluetooth GPS receiver and a USB bluetooth for your laptop (if it doesnt already have bluetooth built in)

Chartplotter - no idea what it is

Internet - vodafone 3g datacard - either pay as you go, £25/mo for 400mb or £53/mo for unlimited downloads - this will work out cheaper and quicker than accessing internet through a mobile phone.
  • Is it a gps connection you want or a gprs connection. Two completely different things:

GPS - Global Positioning System (Sat Nav) does not need an internet connection
GPRS - General Packet Radio Services - allows surfing, email, downloads

Blimey never thought I would be responding to a post on the Tech forum!

Thanks for the replies: a chartplotter is an electronic marine navigation chart; yep I think I'll need GPS and GPRS. It's the kit that I dont understand.
