I know there are tons of carpet threads, and I have done some reading, I just want to clarifiy a few things.
We need to carpet 1 bedroom in our house, and want it to be relatively good quality carpet with underlay (Have made the mistake of cheap carpet before). Now, I've read people saying about buying underlay online rather than through the shops which sounds like it could save us money. However, what happens about fitting it/laying it? Do you do it yourself? If so, how?
We're probably going to have to buy the carpet from Allied or carpet right as they are our closest and we have few independents around. I dont want to get ripped off for extras like underlay as the carpets are expensive enough!
All advice gratefully received. Thanks

Nope, it's a job for the pro's! Buy the door bars, underlay and grippers yourself and you can EASILY lay the underlay and grippers yourself with a bit of patience. Buy the carpet from wherever you want and get them to fit it it as well. Job done0

If I were you i'd shop around and tell them what quotes you've got elsewhere, they will usually move to match it or throw in freebies. I managed to get free fitting & the best quality underlay for the same price as the standard but I was buying for 3 rooms, hallway & staircase!
And if you're ever in doubt about what to put beneath your carpet, just ask the mexican...!0 -
Terrible ^
I recommend Cloud 9 9mm stuff. Seems excellent under our carpets!0 -
Thanks for the advice guys. So how do you actually "fit" underlay? I really have no idea where to start? What about the grippers/door bar- what do I do with these?0

I've never done it myself but try www dot tradepriced dot co dot uk / how_to_fit_carpet_underlay dot html
cant post link properly as new user so type it in as it sounds!!
Alternatively you could ask my Mexican friend again! :rotfl:
For what its worth i'd just get them to do it and buy a standard underlay, afterall its only to a bedroom which is not a high traffic area.0 -
Most underlay is simply staped to the floor.
The grippers should be fitted close to the skirtings and the underlay should run up to them.
the door bar should be left for the carpet fitter to sort out.0
