Redundency looming, entitled to......

..........have been in employment for 7 and a half years and facing redundancy Monday of next week. I am very confused with the available benefits but what I do know is that I need to claim JSA to have my mortgage paid (have an insurance policy covering this).
At present my partner works 30 hours a week (signed a recent contract in Sept) but has a fairly low income (less than £10,000 pa) so wondering what likely benefits we will be able to claim for? When I finish I will be solely responsible for my daughter in taking her to and picking her up from school (relied on my Aunt for the last 3 months).
Many Thanks

You should register your claim with Jobseekers as soon as you have your date of termination - this will ensure you receive your contribution based JSA as soon as possible.
Also, when you have received your letter of the confirmation of termination of employment, (they will certainly need this as evidence), make your claim with your insurance company. It may be prudent to check out the terms of the policy to see how long you have to be unmployed before the payments 'kick in.'(many people do not do this until a claim is being submitted).
As you have worked for over 7 years, you should get 6 months contribution based JSA irrespective of savings and other income - including your partners.
If you have been paid 'in lieu of notice', this will not affect your claim for contribution based JSA. Previously, 'PILON' was deemed as income and JSA would not be paid until the PILON period expired, however, it is now classed as 'capital' and will not affect contribution based JSA.
There may be potential for tax credits and other benefits for your partner, but I would suggest you contact your local CAB who can give you more advice based on your personal financial situation.
Getting your mortgage payments and JSA sorted are obvious priorities, but other assistance such as council tax reductions should also be considered.
Many companies facing significant redundancies offer assistance in such matters - I would ask you employer if there will be a provision of such a service.

Go to the Benefits Advisor website and enter some anonymous details to get an idea of what benefits you are entitled to based on your total household income. You should be able to claim quite a bit I would imagine.
