How far back should you dig out a damp course?

Thanks again David. I am certainly not planning to try and sue the surveyor for every penny I can get, but as you say rather a large sum of money was paid for the reassurance that a full structural survey provides, and to find significant errors within the report is not what I paid for. There was no recommendation for a damp/timber survey. Reference was made to there being some evidence of damp externally, but no sign internally (meter reading inhibited by furniture etc. but no evidence of damp - where we have the damp would not have been inhibited). As I said before, the survey states the house is "assumed" to have a blue brick damp course as there is "no evidence of a slate damp course" - this is despite the slate dpc being visible in at least a couple of locations where it was not covered with earth... something I was able to identify myself despite not ever having seen a slate dpc before in my life.
So, probably the best thing for me to do would be to at least write to the surveyor in the first instance, and state my reluctance to require the need of legal input, and then assuming denial... contact a lawyer.0 -
I can't help thinking that David spent more time on your property than your surveyor did :rotfl:
Isn't it nice to know that someone out there gives a damn and knows their onions ?

Couldn't agree more - David has reached 'legend' status in my books! My surveyor did helpfully point out my gutters were blocked, so credit where credits due...0 -
From what I have seen just on MSE I would say that David should write a book ...I mean, how many people are renovating and improving older properties and would buy a well written book that would save them heaps of money and make sense of what is a minefield ? I bet he'd enjoy creating such a tome too.
