I hope the recession is over but it'll be slash and burn for public sector spending after the election in May (or whenever - GB may want to go sooner now that he's only 6% behind in the polls). Since this economy is heavily reliant on the public sector for jobs and Westminster for funding, but neither the Tories nor Labour needs a mandate from NI to govern, I'm afraid we ain't seen nothing yet. This is the Phony War phase of this current economic readjustment.

Couldn't agree more as usual, leftieM.

Tsk! Would never happen up here, or if it did, a note with other driver's details would be left under the driver's windscreen wiper. Bloody foreigners, eh?!

Oh yes, we're such paragons of virtue up here.

I have had a few experiences of really bad driving here, and have seen a parked car being hit and the culprit driving off!

OTOH, my parents had a breakdown in Galway a few years later and the first person who drove past took them home to stay the night while their son repaired the car and wouldn't accept a penny in return. My dad sent them a bunch of flowers and a voucher for a meal out, they were so touched.

So they're not all bad down there. :A

  • I was up in Belfast recently for the weekend. The cost of the travel, overnight stays and shopping was significantly less than just shopping for the same goods down here.
Almost everything is cheaper in the North compared to the South, so expect more shoppers especially with the tough budget coming in 2 weeks time

Happy Days! You are all more than welcome, almost as much as your hard earned cash!

    ;)
  • What's really annoying about the southerners coming up to Northern Ireland is the way the Irish Press and political classes demonise their own people for doing it. 'Buy Irish' and 'Buy local'

One phrase to this - 'Swings and roundabouts!'

They weren't complaining too much when they had Northern Ireland motorists filling up their vehicles with cheap fuel for ten years!
  • Besides, it's their own people ripping them off! Vat and currency is but a small part of a bigger problem!
