Hot Water

I thought I would start a thread on the use of heating and using hot water. We swap and change in our house. At the moment the hot water is ON all the time but is also on a timer with the CH which is not on.
I wish we could have a switch for each as that would be great.
I do the washing most days @ 30.
We do have a power shower over the bath which I view as a luxuary. To be money saving I should think a shower cubicle with plain/normal electric heated one would be better and then the HW would be not used so much.
NOT changing my bath though as it would be money again!.
What do all you pep's do? Julie

We have a shower on the bath taps that just uses the hot water from the boiler (its on for 40 minutes in the morning when there are just the 2 of us and another hour in the evening if the 2 kids are home from uni).
Heating is from the boiler too and is on when it gets below 15 degrees (maximum 1 hour morning ,1 hour evening).
I boil a kettle and flask the remains for use throughout the day and always boil the kettle if needing hot water for cooking as it uses less electricity than the hob does to boil in a pan.

    Hi Julie,

We have our heating on for an hour in the morning and late afternoon with the radiators turned off and that seems to supply enough hot water for our needs.

I think you should get more help with this from the experts on the gas and electricity board so I'll move your thread over there.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Hi pink and sending my objection and dissagreement to my chatty thread being moved from old style.
If my thread is moved so should the "is your heating on or off" thread be moved to gass and electric. It is on the same lines is it not? Julie.

My water is on timed from 9am to 10am. Thats enough for DS and I each to have a shower. The heating is just put on manually when it gets chilly. At the moment that's about 2pm, and it gets switched off again at 6. I use dw and wm on alternate days and I'm paying £15 ish a week. I'm with Scottish Power and enter my meter readings weekly online so I'm always up to date with my a/c!

Unless you have an old washing machine the temp you wash at has nothing to do with your hot water as they are now all cold water fed.

So why don't you just fit a timer on your immersion heater? Having it on 24/7 is completely unecessary if it's properly insulated.
