How long for Paypal refund

Options
I sold an item last month and the buyers payment came through as echeque. (buyer was new to ebay/paypal)

There was a problem with the item - it was perfume which the buyer said smelt off. I had had it for a year, never sprayed it, didn't know what it should smell like but accepted this and said I would refund for the item (not postage) and processed the partial payment on the 14th.

All showing as 'completed' in my Paypal but buyer mailed today to say refund not received. I have mailed the paypal refund transaction id but wondered if it was normal for it to take some time if the buyer was new and whether it should be me or buyer that should chase paypal if there is a problem.

thanks

I am having a similar problem where I should have received a refund within 5 days and it still hasn't appeared in my PayPal account. Perhaps they are having problems at the moment.

First off I would check your 'sent' payments to see if the refund's definitely there- and also check that the email address you send it to was correct. Hopefully someone can offer more advice later :)

Refunds are normally instant or very very quick (within minutes) and it's the same for e-cheques as well as normal payments.

I'm fairly sure that even if you refund before the e-cheque clears into your account, Paypal just cancel the transaction to take the money from the buyer.

As the poster above says, if the refund shows in your account and it's against the correct transaction then it will have gone to the correct person. If your account is correct then they need to contact Paypal to see why they haven't received it. Perhaps there is an issue with their account not being setup correctly yet to receive payments if it's not linked / authorised to a bank account yet?

Does your buyer know that their refund will go back to where it came from? For example if they funded the echeque by their debit card, this is where the refund would have went to. Or if it came from their bank, then it will be returned to their bank. Maybe they are loking at the list of recent transactions on Paypal, and expecting an amount of moeny from you to be there? Thinking about it, if it was an echeque, then it did not come from a Paypal balance, so won't go back there. Just a thought.

I will let them know that - I also just assumed it would show on their paypal as a transaction

It'll show on Paypal, but won't make a difference to their actual balance/amount in the account. Sorry, I don't make it very easy to understand, I'm useless, never make a good teacher!!
