Feel a bit if a
for asking a silly question really. ::)
My computer was "flattened" software-wise last week and Windows XP Professional was installed. I expected Microsoft Word / Excel / Powerpoint etc to be on there but they're not!!!
How do I get them on now? I know its a silly question but I don't really want to fork out major bucks getting them on my system if theres a cheaper way of doing it.
Any help to a complete non-techie would be gratefully received...
Thanks
Martin

Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question on these boards.
As for your Office problem I'm afraid that you will hvae to go out and buy a copy of the software and that ain't cheap.
One alternative is to ask what kind of licence agreement your workplace has (assuming they have Microsoft Office), as some agreemnets allow for multiple installs of the same programme.
Another kind of agreemnet allows employees to install the software on their home PC on the proviso that it is taken off if / when the employee leaves.
One final alternative, you could always go out and buy a programme that will do the same job as Office but will be considerably cheaper, something like Works 7.0 at around £70 will do a similar job.

One problem with Works, which crops up time and again, is its document and spreadsheet incompatibility with other programs (including Word and Excel). There are ways around the problem, but it is not totally straightforward.
If you want Word/Excel/Powerpoint, another option may be to look at Educational licensing, if anyone at your address is in college/school/uni you qualify to buy Office XP Standard for £100 - which is a major saving.
Amazon Office XP Guide has more details.
If you want Word/Excel functionality, without paying MS prices, try Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org/
Hope that helps a bit.0 -
It will read and write MS Office files like work and Excel

You can order a CD or just download it. Look for the Windows version.
Here is a link.

If you have kids that are in full time education you can get a student licence for office which is pretty reasonable value.0

This is the Quick! Grab it while you can board you know. Techie questions should be posted in the Techie Questions & Discussion board. This has nothing to do with Grab it while you can. Please check where to post in future. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh but it's happening all too often now.
Thanks

Need to know what you mean by flattened...I assume you mean that you installed Windows XP Professional and cant find the shortcuts.......
You can see if you have Microsoft Word installed by following this, though this for the Home version...cant remember if the pro version is the same:-
Click = Left click
Click START (bottom left)
Click ALL PROGRAMS
Click ACCESSORIES
Click WINDOWS XP EXPLORER
Click MY COMPUTER
Click LOCAL DISK (usually C: drive)
Click PROGRAM FILES
Click MICROSOFT OFFICE
Click OFFICE11 (maybe slightly different depending on version of MS Office you have)
click VIEW DETAILS
click size (sort by largest size file first) - winword application will hopefully at the top of the list
click to highlight winword
right click
select SEND TO/DESKTOP (CREATE SHORTCUT)
Let me know if this helps.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -
Folks,
Please check out the dates of the posts in this thread - prior to a late January 2005 flurry of resurrection-like activity, the last post in this thread was made back in August! Quite probably the OP has fixed the problem or moved on. Either way, he may well not respond!0
