DFS Sofa - Can I Cancel?

Hi,
Hopefully a quick question...about 3 weeks ago, I went into DFS and decided on a corner sofa, the salesman filled out the paperwork very quickly, and started talking about extras, stain protection etc...before I knew it, it was all added on, and the total was £1785 - paperwork signed in record speed and deposit of £185 paid, all very rushed - on the paperwork he wrote that sizes were tbc by the following day...and sofa due mid January...
So, off I go home. Totally forgot to phone up and confirm sizes, so this hasn't been done yet. However, in the last couple of weeks, we've had redundancies at work, and I now no longer have a job, so I can't afford to be spending £1600 on a sofa, and I'm also having to move house to a smaller place, and there's no way the sofa will now fit.
I realise that with Sofas, they are made to order etc...but surely the idea of a deposit is in case of cancellations? Now, I've heard horror stories about trying to cancel orders with DFS, so wondered if anyone had any thoughts or ideas of how I can go about it? I'm not expecting it to be made yet, as it isnt due for delivery for another 6-7 weeks.....
Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Have you just paid the deposit and were due to pay the balance on delivery or have you signed a credit agreement for the interest free credit? if you have signed the credit agreement, I think you will find it very difficult to cancel.
Not sure about if you haven't and were planning to pay the balance on delivery, in this instance you may just get away with losing your deposit but you need to check the papaerwork you have signedAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -

I know s0d all about the legal side of this but could you phone with very small measurements of where you want the furniture to fit, let them tell you it won't fit and pretend that you'll be back to buy another suite to suit your room after Xmas?
That's what I'd do.0 -

Yeah I paid the deposit, and then it was balance on delivery. So, one - I won't live at the address they have when it's due to be delivered (if they won't cancel), and two, surely they won't attempt to deliver, if I tell them I just don't have the cash to pay for it??
I guess all I can do it speak to them. Tried to give them a ring, but couldn't get through, have got email addy of branch, I might send an email and see what happens...0 -
SimonJB - I could do it that way I guess....except I'll look a bit stupid, but that's preferrable to having to fork out for a sofa I can't afford anymore ;(0

If you need any advice on how to cope with looking stupid feel free to ask me.
I'm always somewhere.0 -
if you signed up with stain protection so easily, i would check whether you have also signed up for payment protection, as this could now kick in seeing as you have been made redundant
DFS dont process the finance, until you take delivery of the sofa. however, getting them to cancel an order, is difficult to say the least
