    lol - i used to chuck a sickie about every 2 months. i have often done it when i didn't have enough petrol in the car and have been in the same situation myself.

    you are not much use at work feeling bad with the rest of your life, money etc.

    take the day but make sure you do the things you are taking the day off to do.

    You probaly wouldn't get away this these days with emphasis on reducing sickness absence rates- most employers would refer you to occupational health, ultimately discipline and sack.

    personally i've never worked anywhere longer than 3 years - always moved to a better paid job and probably have about 6 sickies a year.

    but i only had 3 days real sickies in the past 12 months so only 9 days in total

    it depends on the employer how bothered they are about this. personally i find that if you are less than 10 days per year no-one says anything.

    Depends which industry you work in - I'm in investment banking and they start asking questions at more than 6 days a year without a doctor's note, particularly if they're individual days dotted about. Friday and Monday sickies cause raised eyebrows. Fortunately I've got an excellent boss who will approve emergency days' holiday out of your allowance without prior notification if there's nothing pressing workwise on the agenda. In return he knows that we will stay late in order to get a job done if necessary.
    The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
  • glad to hear you decided to take the honest option - I'm not having a go about people who take sickies but it is preferable to have permission to take the day off so you can wander around sorting things out without any fear of being caught PLUS if you take it our of your holiday - ok you may lose one day of real holiday time BUT YOU STILL GET PAID for the day while you sort out your finances - thats got to make money sense. Like most people I don't get sick pay, dunno bout you, but statuatory sick pay is about as useful as a pig in a choclate fireguard and you have to be ill for at least 3 days to claim it. so taking holiday is the preferable option. well done,

    now you said in your first post you were in trouble financially and to ignore your sig. perhaps now that you've got the hard part over maybe you could post some details and peeps maybe able to help?

    My company consider a Friday or a Monday to be 3 days off sick, not just one, as they count the weekends into it. They are very hard on sick leave, including the genuine cases, and their attitude to 'occupational health' is that your health is in your own hands and you only succumb to illness if you choose to, and its your responsibility as an employee of theirs to ensure that you never become ill. It sounds laughable, only its not in the least bit funny, they are deadly serious. I'm sure thats a huge comfort to the employees who have 'chosen' to succumb to cancer, heart attacks etc etc, if only they had read through their company contract first, they would have known that these things were considered misconduct and they could have chosen to avoid them......grrrrr....as you can see I've got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about this, my employers are subhuman...

    Hey Thriftylady,

    That's horrendous! From memory, I think you are preggers too - how did that go down and do you get good maternity leave, if you don't mind me asking?

    P.S. How did you get on yesterday Miffi?

    scottishspendaholic x
    MBNA = £4,000 / Next = £925 (approx. tbc on 19/8)
    Tesco = £2,910.11 / Smile overdraft = £500
    Bank of Scotland = £2,782.83

    well, when you are pregnant its the one time when they thankfully don't hassle you over any associated ill health as long as you can prove it was related to your pregnancy..... Maternity leave is ok - not the worst and not the most generous either, we get the first 3 months on full pay....but they just make everything as awkward as possible !! you can probably tell that I'm not someone who is particularly happy in their job !!!
