Options
Hi can someone tell me how to wire up a ceiling rose that has two way switching. I have purchased a new 5 light and wired it as per instructions, trouble is the old ceiling rose is wired up differently there are for red wires all on seperate terminals, all the black are togher as are all the earth wires. Please help as i have been quoted £25 for what seems like 5 minutes work.

I can think of no occasion when the live (red) wires wouldn't have at least two of them connected to each other. The incoming live supply would (at the very least) be connected to the live wire going down to the switch and, if not the last light in the circuit, also to the live supply going off to the next light. Are you sure they are all "seperate terminals" or are the terminals in fact all part of one common connection each wire having it's own screw (as I expect)?

Look here, here and here for more info & pictures.

First consider if £25 is worth paying rather than your relatives paying your funeral bill!

If you get beyond that and you have a bit of knowledge of electrics you could have a look here. If your still none the wiser or have any questions think back to the £25.

£25 is a total bargain...i'd have expected to pay at least double that to even see a tradesmen cross my threshold. That it's 5 minutes work is irrelevant . Your paying for their knowledge plus of course they have to cover countless other overheads.

    Safety comes before Moneysavings..ALWAYs!
  • As always stay safe and turn off the lighting power.
Googled "two way switching" and found this... try lighting rose....

Rremember you are paying the electrician for his knowledge, not his time. Out of the £25 you pay him, £5 is to actually do the job and £20 is to know how to do the job. Its only a 5 minute job if you know how to do it.

If you can get it done for £25 then jump at the chance. You are not paying for the work but you are paying for the knowledge. Even as a retired electrician I would not do it for less than that. Especially as you do not know how to do it yourself.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
