I have a DVD recorder with a HDD combined that's used with my television. It has decided to pack up after just 14months.
Does anyone know if I have the right to return the item for repair/replacement after such a short time (It is a JVC and was expensive so I expect it to last longer than 14 months).
I have checked and changed the fuse in the plug but it still doesn't work.
Any help/advice would be appreciated, thank you

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) will apply here, and gives you the right to ask for a repair at this time. One problem you may come across though is being asked to prove that this is a fault rather than normal wear and tear. Within the first 6 months of purchase/installation, the burden of proof lies with the retailer. What this effectively means is that if you go back because something is broken, you don't have to prove you didn't break it, it is up to the retailer to prove that it didn't have a fault when they sold it to you. If they can't, then you are entitled to ask for a repair.
That's the concise version. For a more in depth answer, call Consumer Direct on 0845 404 0506 if you are in GB, or 0845 600 6262 if you are in NI.

It's the DR-MH20.
I have just checked the internal quick blow fuse which has indeed blown.
I have replaced that but when I power up, it blows the fuse again, have replaced it 3 times now but to no avail.
They are the correct fuses BTW

Don't mess with it anymore and if you still have the original blown fuse put that back in. You may be invalidating any chance you have of a free repair or replacement by having taken the cover off.
Make sure when you put the screws back that you don't damage them in any way.
The reason for my comments is that they will look for signs of any attempt at an unauthorised repair before carrying out their checks and a fuse manufactured by a company that JVC don't use or damaged screws will give the game away.0 -
I contacted Digital Direct, whom I'd bought the unit from and they sent me an email telling me to contact JVC directly, which I did.
I received a replacement unit from JVC some days later but noticed that it was NOT brand new.
My replacement unit makes an horrendous humming noise, probably the hard drive.
I contacted JVC again and they are sending another unit out to me tomorrow. I asked their advisor if the units they send are new, she said that they are either reconditioned or ex display.
I got to thinking though, should I have been directed to JVC in the first place or is it Digital Directs responsibility to send me a brand new replacement unit??0 -
They are doing this out of the warranty period, don't knock it, it is more than many companies would do.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
