diamond lead effect windows

Can anyone advise me on removing the diamond lead effect from my double glazed windows? The leading is on the outside on some windows (downstairs) and the inside of others (upstairs). I've heard that a hairdryer will soften the 'lead' strips. My big worry is that the trace of the lines will still be visible when I've removed the strips?
Anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks

  • By inside do you mean inside the room or inside the two pains of glass?

Simplest would be to replace the glazed units...though not that cheap. Is the aim to remove it completely from all windows or just the upstairs where it's inside?

Would you be happy if the lead on the upstairs windows was on the outside instead..if so remove the beads holding the units in, take the glazed units out, turn them around and refit the beads !

The lead is glued to the glass so you could try get something like a stanley blade under one edge and pull off..then use all the usual things like WD40, meths etc in an attempt to remove the remaining glue..risk is you might always have the lines where the lead was though or scratches to the glass. Heat will help soften the glue though not too hot as lead fumes are somewhat toxic!
  • Many thanks for your advice. I want to get rid of all the leading as it's becoming faded and dull looking. Any ideas how much it costs to replace an 120x136cm double glazed unit? Thanks again.
  • remove the lead gently with a blade at one corner and pull the rest off.use cream cleaner to remove the glue wipe that off then use traffic film remover this removes vinyle lettering glue from vans etc so im sure will not do any harm to glass

a hair dryer will soften the glue saving you spending hours hacking at it with a blade, then use the blade to remove the remaining glue with some turps and that should be it out the way.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
