The staff in store should have asked the three basic questions we are always told to ask before beginning an application
    - are you over 18?
    - are you a full time UK resident/citizen?
    - are you in full time employment?
Just a thought anyway but an Argos Card does have the option to have a second card holder - do you have a partner who is in full time employment? If you do, he can apply for the card and you can be the second card holder on the account.

so long as she works 15 hours a week (and has an ok credit record) they should accept her application, albeit with a small credit limit

well off the top of my head the boxes on the form are

    full time
part time (at least 15 hours a week)
    self employed
    retired
    home maker
    student

she doesnt have to work full time, so long as they are satisfied that her job is secure and she has a good repayemnt history (so it really helps if you can give an employers phone number on the form)

Did you actually fill the form in or was you told that because you are not working that you could not apply. Its just if someone is on benefits for example DLA then they are still allowed to apply they are put on the form as being retired and you tell the operator that they are on benefits, but it cant just be because you are out of work that you are on benefits. Hope this helps

Yes to the first two but no to the third and I still got one. OP, they have probably done you a favour. This card is one of my biggest regrets. It is okay if you are disciplined enough to pay within the allocated time (ie, six months). But the interest is pretty high. Two and a half years ago I bought £200 worth of Christmas items on a buy now pay in 12 months offer. I had every intention of clearing the debt at the time but one thing led to another and it never got paid. Two and a half years down the line I now owe £230. I have paid £10/month over eighteen months which equates to £180 in payments. Yet I still owe the original debt plus an extra £30. Do yourself a favour and steer clear of any uneccesary debt.

I got an Argos card 3 years ago even though I do not work - dedicated housewife - with no problems. It was done via phone and not in a store - I don't know if this make a difference but I've found them to be really helpful on the few occassions I've had to call.
