Ghost calls

Over the last couple of weeks, we have started receiving lots of 'ghost calls' every day. The phone rings twice, and when we dial 1471 it doesn't recognise we have even been called?!

The calls average at about 20 per day, and happen 24 hours a day. We have had to resort to taking the phone off the hook overnight so we are not woken up by these annoying calls

Our phone line is with virgin Media, and when we called them, all they could say is to register with TPS!

Does anyone have any idea what we can do to stop this please? It's highly anoying when the phone keeps ringing all day, and leaving the phone off the hook isn't ideal either!

Thanks in advance

    Boo!

    Annoying, aren't they?
  • I had something similar, turns out some software that was used for cold calling was faulty and my number kept on coming up every couple of minutes rather than every couple of days.

The explanation was a bit more techinical but this is the laymans explanation.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

The obvious thing to occur to me is DCAs - could this be the case for you?

No,it's not,Never heard that one before.
The line is ring tripping,we got this a lot when I was a service tech with NTL/VM.It's caused by the external drop cable or extension cabling being damaged.Try removing the CTE5 Master socket faceplate & connecting the phone to the test socket. If it stops, then your extensions re the cause. If not, then it's from the CTE5 back, either way,you need an engineer to come out. It's basically a short in the cable, normally caused by the installer useing a knife to remove the cable sheathing & cutting the covering of the inner pairs & in the wet weather we have been getting, causing it to short.
In extreme cases,it can cause the phoneline to tap 111,which will result in the police knocking on your door at god knows when.
  • I've been getting non ghost calls, but I think I wish they were :D

Hello, is that Mr Xxx, You recently filled in a survey to say you had over £1000 of unsecured debt ..........

Me "no I didn't and I'm debt free"

The next day I get a recorded message telling me I can wipe out all my debts.

And I'm registered with the TPA.

Oddly I never had all these calls while I was with BT, they only started when I moved to Virgin last month (ported number across)

  • The blank posting just needs to be highlighted and all will be apparent. It made me laugh!

To the person who asked about DCA's - yes it could well be. I am a recently discharged BR, but there are one or two people who haven't quite got the message yet! I've only lived here since March, and we've only had this number since May, so it should be quite easy to narrow down who has this number. But if that was the case, would 1471 at least say we had been called at xx time, but it doesn't! According to 1471 we have not been called!

I think the most reasonable explanation is the one who said about the installer causing a fault when the line was installed. Although it was installed in may,I do remember it was a wet day so this could be the issue. Strange how other people have experienced this but only with VM.

We will need to call VM again and make them see there is a problem which needs to be dealt with. When we rang them last week, they just told us to register with TPS so obviously didn't believe this would be their problem!

One question - when you say about using the test socket, what do you mean? We only have one socket here, which is the one the phone is plugged into?

Thanks for all the advice so far
