How do you disconnect your landline?

Hi
I am desperate to save money and am thinking of disconnecting my landline. I barely use it to make calls or recieve them and it would be much cheaper for me to just use my PAYG mobile when I need to. My bill is 90% line rental 10% calls. Do I have to pay for this? Do they physically disconnect the line? If I wanted to reconnect in a few years time how hard would that be?

I am with BT. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

  • No. I have broadband at the moment but intend to cancel my contract when it ends as I can use the internet at work if I need to. The I will disconnect my landline - I hope!

You could pay around £122.50 for reconnection in the future, depends if the BT free connection offer is still running.
This assume you are not currently still in contract.
It will just be disconnected at the exchange, no entry to the property is required.

I did this earlier this year, and have not regretted it. I applied online to cancel the account. I did wonder whether someone would come round with a giant pair of wire clippers, but they just do it from their end.

I too just use a cheap PAYG mobile phone, and I have mobile broadband.

Some MSE people have reported an excessive final charge, but the BT reps on here will sort out any problems.

 If you cancel your phone line whilst still in 12/18 month contract your be subject to a cancellation fee, which the reps have no power to waive unless it was raised incorrectly.
