Cost of relocating gas/electricity meters

Hi there,
Does anyone have any experience of asking for meters to be relocated - either outside a property or into another room? I'm just wondering whether it would be horrendously expensive - as a place I'm looking to buy currently has them in a unit in the kitchen which is using valuable space which could be put to better use to house white goods.
Also, the gas meter is one of those card ones and I think they're hugely expensive for gas but would the gas company charge - nominally or otherwise - to change this to a standard meter?
Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

Scottish Power will move electricty meters for free within a 1m radius.
A relocation may involve moving the incomming supply and this can be expensive.
For me this was going to come to £1500 to move the supply (not the meters), something that just couldn't be justified given the space that'ld be recouped
