Loading software onto Netbook

I have a set of MS Office Disks and want to load the software onto my Netbook.

Using my laptop I copied the disks to a usb memory stick but the software failed to load from the stick.

I'm not keen on using the free Microsoft Works software and don't want to buy an external DVD drive just for this. Any ideas what else I can try

Thanks

  • According to Microsoft you can download the office files and then use the product key that came with your disks, assuming you have a recent version. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/HA103621001033.aspx

If it doesn't work you can always try Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/

Thanks - I do have the product key but it's the 2003 version so I'll have to check it out

I'm comfy with the 2003 version which is why I prefer to keep using that - gosh, I'm getting old

Try the following - this should work for most CDs and DVDs (that don't have copy protection):

    1. Install IsoRecorder on a machine with a CD drive (http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm)
    2. Insert CD to drive, right click drive and select "Create ISO Image". Follow the wizard and you'll have a single ISO file that mirrors the CD. Copy the ISO file to a memory stick
    3. Install Virtual Clonedrive on the Netbook (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html)
    4. Insert memory stick into netbook. Open memory stick in explorer.
    5. Right click ISO file and select Open With => Virtual Clonedrive. You should now see a virtual copy of the CD sitting in My Computer.

    Good luck

Are you maybe trying to run the installer from the flash drive? If so you need to copy the files onto the netbook hard drive first, then run the installer.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I can't remember tbh, tried it a few weeks ago and then haven't had time to sort it out.

I'm sure one of these suggestions will sort me out - Many thanks for your replies :T

    As an alternative:

If you have 2 computers at home, and one has a CD/DVD, and they are networked (easily done if you have a router) you can "share" the CD drive from one computer over the network, so that the netbook can access it.

I can elaborate if anyone wants more details.

Yes, I do have a wireless router. Never thought of setting up a network as I tend to use the netbook when I'm out and about and the laptop at home. If it's not too much trouble could you post or PM the details as I guess I could use this for transferring over photos and docs too !

    Thanks

Macman's answer is the best one. I've done this myself with absolutely no problems (you don't need to bother with loudcox's solution or trying to transfer over network). Simply copy and paste all the files on the CD onto the flash drive, then copy from the flash drive to the netbook's hard drive and run the installer from there. Although I've done this with Office 2007, I've personally copied Office 2003 installations (no such things as netbooks when I'd used 2003) for backup by using "copy/paste of files" method with no problems.

Agreed - Macman is a simple solution, but as always, there is often more than one way !

To set up a simple network:

Make sure both computers are switched on, and can access the internet through the router.
On each one, Go to "My Computer" and right click
Make sure that the "Workgroup" setting on all computers is the same (default is "Workgroup")
If they can both connect via your router to the internet, they should then be able to "see" each other" on the network

Open Windows Explorer, and look for "My Network Places"
Expand this to Entire Network / Microosfot Windows Network / Workgroup
You should see an entry for each computer, although limited as to what resources you can see at this point.

On the computer with the CD drive (or other drive you want to sahre):

In Windows Explorer, right click on the CD drive and select "Sharing"
Tick the "Share this folder" box
Repeat this with any other drives or folders you want to share

You should then be able to see the drives and folders you have shared on your other computer, via "My Network Places"

You can then just copy and paste between the remote computer and the local. Great for sharing files without using a USB drive all the time, and quicker as well.

I hope that was clear - let me know if you need more help
