Yesterday my son and his girl friend purchased a boxed set of cookware in Debenhams. It had a large white label on marked £120. The store assistant confirmed it then had the clearly marked 25% discount applicable during the spectacular event. They bought a few more items and paid for the goods.
When they got home they looked at the receipt and they had been charged £155 less 25%.
You may ask why they didn't notice when paying and the simple reason is the shop was heaving and they had quite a few items so didn't take too much notice.
Do they have any legal right to insist the price of £120 less 25% or is this just another case of putting the prices up before the "discount" event please?
Thanks.

It could be a till error.ring and check.0

I've never noticed them put prices up before the event, so it was probably a mistake. I would just take it back and explain, I'm sure they will refund you without a problem.0

Whenever I've been to Debenhams those white stickers usually show the new discounted price, ie inclusive of the advertised 25% discount.0

I've just seen the box and the white sticker has a bar code on it but on the side at the bottom there is another bar code so I suspect this is the one they scanned. As you say it looks like a mistake and I'd hate to make a fuss taking it back etc but now I've seen the box I can point it out to them. Hopefully they will accept their mistake and refund the difference.
I haven't thought to check on their website but will do and see what price they have. Thanks for your help.0 -
Unfortunately, I was in Debenhams yesterday..... and I have to say that the merchandising was a little confusing. There were "25% Off" banners and signs everywhere, and much smaller ones saying "10% Off Cosmetics". The signs were splashed liberally all over the sickly smelling cosmetics section of the store but when it came to putting my xmas present purchases through the till, the goods came up 10% off - I didn't kick off (it was way too busy) but I thought the merchandising was misleading.
The discount should have come up on the till - the goods came up on the till already with the discount, not the usual price on one line, and a discount applied as a separate line item.
I'd go back and see them.0 -
Sounds as though it was a busy day everywhere for Debenham stores!
What is interesting is I have found the set online and it is priced up as £155.65 with 25% discount. This amount isn't anywhere on the box, just the white price sticker with £120 printed on underneath the bar code. Even with 25% off it doesn't come down to exactly £120. So possibly my theory that it was £120 originally and then the price increased ready for the 25% discount could be true. Can they go back and say "this is the price on the box, we were told it would be discounted by a further 25% but as you can see we have been charged £155.65 less 25%". Do they have any legal right to insist they are given a refund for the difference?0 -
I'm not sure re: the legal position because the contract has been fulfilled - the individuals should have queried the price at the point of sale.
However - Debenhams offer a returns policy in excess of your statutory rights. Therefore, providing the goods are in exactly the same condition as when purchased, they could go back and question the error. If Debenhams disagree, I'd simply ask for a full refund in accordance with their policy - I doubt they would try and argue their way out of it because the promotion is 25% off the ticketted price - I know that from my experience yesterday.0
